All workers must take steps to protect his or her health and safety by working in compliance with the law and with safe work practices and procedures established by industry. It’s Interior Contracting & Management’s goal to prevent all accidents to workers because we believe that all accidents are preventable. If all workers and management accept safety as a personal responsibility, then we believe that our goal of an accident free workplace can be achieved.

Construction site health and safety during COVID-19

At Interior Contracting & Management Inc. we strive to provide a safe and healthy workplace for our employees. Protecting our employees from injury and occupational disease is our most important objective. All supervisors and workers must be dedicated to reducing the risk of injury and preventing the spread of this deadly virus.

To deal with this new and invisible threat we need to address some key areas that we feel can limit the spread of this virus and ultimately protect everyone involved.

These are as follows:

Protecting yourself and your co-workers

Corona viruses are spread through close contact. Here are some helpful tips to help prevent the spread of germs:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Sneeze and cough into your sleeve.

  • If you use a tissue, discard immediately and wash your hands afterward.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.

  • Stay home if you are sick.

  • Avoid high-touch areas, where possible, or ensure you clean your hands after.

  • Where possible, wear gloves when interacting with high-touch areas. Do not touch your face with gloved hands. Take care when removing gloves. Ensure you wash your hands after removing them.

  • If you are ill: notify your supervisor immediately, complete the self-assessment

  • Should you find that you feel sick or develop any symptoms of COVID-19 prior to your shift then we require you to stay home and monitor your self. Please notify your supervisor that you will not be showing up for your scheduled shift and complete a self assessment (https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/)

Reporting illness

The symptoms of COVID-19 are like many other illnesses, including the cold and flu. At this time, it is recommended that any worker who has any symptoms related to cold, flu or COVID-19 should be sent home.

In addition, employers should advise these workers to complete the online self assessment or call either:

  • Telehealth: 1-866-797-0000

  • Their primary care provider (for example, family physician)

Physical distancing

In order to maintain and achieve physical distancing, we need everyone to be involved and aware of their surroundings. It is important to maintain a 2 Meter (6’-6”) separation from each other. We understand that sometimes this may not be possible given the nature of the work being carried out. If at any time you are concerned that you wont be able to maintain a safe distance from your coworker then you need to speak with the site supervisor and advise of your concern. Together we can work out a way to get the job completed while achieving a safe working environment for our employees.

Along with physical distancing we will be supplying surgical grade masks and gloves to employees who care to wear them. We ask that these items be disposed of in a responsible manor.

We will be limiting the number of Employees / Contractors to 6 on any one site.

On-site sanitation

We will ensure that there is access to soap and water or Alcohol-based Hand Sanitizers and we encourage everyone to wash their hands frequently throughout their shift.

Sanitizing all commonly touched surfaces or areas. This should be conducted three times per shift or as necessary. (hand tools, door handles, Power tools and work surfaces)

Alcohol based sanitizers will be provided.

In closing, I want to thank everyone for their cooperation in dealing with the new threat of Covid-19. We know that we all need to get back to work but we also need to adapt to this and change our work habits in order to minimize spread of this deadly virus. Your safety and the safety of everyone around you is and must be our first priority. I feel if we are all diligent and continue to implement some of these new safety guidelines, that we will be able to achieve a safe workplace and return home to our families safely every day. We all need to do our part and I believe, together we can achieve our goals. Should at anytime you feel uncomfortable with a request or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact your supervisor or anyone in management.
